5 Great Mistakes When Adding Description Meta Tags

Before posting this article, I made a wide research about this topic. I don’t say that I’m an SEO expert but somehow, I know I can help you a little. Hehehe. Let’s go back to the topic. In this post, we will be discussing about description Meta tags. Do you use this thing?

If you are not yet familiar with description meta tags, it is a part of your HTML code that gives Search Engine a summary of what your page is about. It is different from a title page as discussed on my earlier post, “Modifying Blog’s Page Title Tags.” In adding description meta tags, some bloggers have a wrong way of doing it. Here are some of their mistakes:

1. Writing a description meta tag that has no relation to the content on the page
This is suicide! You must avoid this! If your description meta tag has no relation to your content, then you blog is not actually optimized. On this part of the code, you should inform the users and visitor the detailed description of your blog.

2. Using generic descriptions like “My Webpage”, “A blog of myself” or “Page about Photoshop”
Using the above tags gives a very limited information about your blog. If the user search for something and sees you blog on the result page, your snippet will be showing a not-relevant description. Users may not click or visit your site.

3. Filling the description meta tags with only keywords
Keywords are for keywords meta tags so description meta tags doesn’t deserve to have a lot of keywords. A good description meta tag must be a sentence or two or a short paragraph.

4. Copying and pasting the entire content of the document into the description meta tag
Did you get it? The action above is done by copying one of your posts and pasting it on description meta tag. Remember that its purpose is to tell Search Engine and users about the summary of your blog, so don’t put your article or post in here.

5. Using single description meta tag across all of your blog’s pages or a large group of pages
Should I say, “There’s always an exception?” Well, yes it is! Handcrafting description meta tags probably isn’t feasible if your site has thousands of pages. In this case, bloggers should use a meta tag plug-in for their blogs.
